Failure isn’t Failure

I’m proud to announce that ReadyAimLife has partnered with the group at the Heart alive blog.  Like RAL, the Heart alive blog is a collaborative effort.  Five guys sharing their lives, learning to live life at its fullest.

Kevin Beasley and his team write articles that deal with real, every day issues that men are dealing with.  Kevin wrote a great article this week on Failure.  The title — “failure isn’t failure, quitting is failure” — resonates with me.  One of my mantra’s is “there is no failure, only feedback”.  Basically, failure only occurs once you’ve given up.  Up to the point you quit, you haven’t admitted defeat.  I loved the way he summed up his thoughts:

“That’s how this thing works I think.  Until I cash in my chips and count the cost, in other words, QUIT, I haven’t lost an inch of ground.  Keep Fighting!  I don’t know what you’re struggling with, but don’t lay on the mat!GET UP! You are not down for the count.  You have another round in you.  Get off the freakin’ mat and fight!”

Is there a time to give up!  Is there a place at which it doesn’t make sense to keep beating your head against the wall?  Sure, most of the time people give up much too soon.

I was on the phone with a friend last night.  He is starting a small business, grinding through the startup process.  It’s a new industry for him and its taken a lot of research to learn all of the regulations he needs to follow.  He’s just starting to turn the corner to be able to open his doors.  It’s getting exciting . . . and then he finds out about a competitor that’s starting up.  In the same industry.  In the same community.  Selling the exact same product.  Oh yeah, and the competitor is much more connected into the market than my friend.  My friend’s first reaction?  He spent about 10 minutes feeling sorry for himself and then re-committed to the project and started working even harder.  He’s more focused than ever to make his dream come true.

Most of us quit much too soon.  Don’t let that be you.
