I lack trust.
There is no other way to put it.
If I take a step back and look at my life, I feel like I have built it on security and normalcy. The world is built on that. We are told to get a good job and a 401k. All of those things are good, but has God called us to them? Has Almighty God called me to those things?
I can’t judge other people and how they choose to live, but I can choose how I live.
The story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego shows trust on a different level. King Nebuchadnezzar was fired up that they refused to serve his gods and worship a gold statue that he had. King Nebuchadnezzar threatened to throw them into a furnace if they did not bow down to his gods.
This was the response from Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego:
O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God whom we serve is able to save us. He will rescue us from your power. But even if he doesn’t, we want to make it clear to you, your majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up.
Daniel 3:16-18.
The outcome was irrelevant. Whether or not they were rescued, they trusted God. That was the bottom line.
If I’m honest I can’t say I would react the same way.
If I’m super honest, would I even find myself in the position to make that decision. Truly trusting God requires a level of insanity. Don’t you actually have to be crazy to give up your life as an expression of your trust in God. God is calling us to a life of trust, even if it takes us down difficult roads. It isn’t so much a question of whether we have it all together to make the right decision, but would we be willing to be considered insane to follow Him.
Maybe He is calling us to be reckless in our relationship with Him. Maybe on the other side of our fear and insecurity is the relationship we want with God.
